East Coast Soul Wedding Performance at Ochre Court

The Vocal Section - Ochre Court Wedding

East Coast Soul was invited to perform at Ochre Court in Newport, RI for the beautiful wedding of Anthony and Kate in October of 2015. Anthony and Kate first learned of the band through a friend, and took an opportunity to see us live at a club event in Boston. We were grateful to learn that East Coast Soul was their first choice for entertainment after seeing us perform. This was our first time working at Ochre Court wedding as a Newport, RI Wedding Band. We are always excited to work with a new venue. It was even better because of the beautiful location and wonderful time of year. We’ve been hearing amazing things about [VENUE] for some time, so then opportunity to work there was more than welcome. The staff proved warm, welcoming, and helpful and made our time there a true pleasure.

Once the big day arrived, East Coast Soul traveled to Newport, RI and began our long process of loading in to the venue. Getting to Newport, RI in the off-season is notably easier than in the height of summer. We were also thrilled to see that Ochre Court makes ramps available for load in, which are game changers. With that process complete, the band was ready to soundcheck. Soundcheck is one of the most important elements of our preparation process. Every room we perform in is very different, acoustically speaking. Without sound-checking, what could have sounded good in another room can sound totally horrible in another. This room in particular, with high vaulted, stone ceilings, requires extra effort to acheve a great sound.

Part of our planning process involves outlining exactly what portions of the wedding East Coast Soul will be involved with. Also, is is often the case, East Coast Soul was also asked to provide cocktail hour music. Because cocktail hour was being held at the same location as the primary performance, we were able to have all of our band members get involved with cocktail hour. Their cocktail hour was held in the main hall. As musicians who love jazz, we always appreciate the opportunity to set a classy mood for any reception. Our musicians blazed through an hour set of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and more. When that was finished, the wedding was ready to move to the reception portion of the evening.

In a majority of weddings, East Coast Soul is asked to provide MC services for the program portions of the evening. For this wedding in particular, we worked with the brother of the bride who served as the primary MC. In many weddings, we are also asked to perform the couple's parent dances. This is a chance for the bride and groom to spend a couple minutes on the dance floor with their father and mother, respectively. Parent dances are a great way to start the performance portion of the evening. We generally ask for the attention of the guests to start. We then often ask them to join the couple and their parents on the dance floor, and then move directly in to the rest of the performance.

Our performances often start with older material. We've found this is a great way to get folks up on the dance floor with songs they're familiar with. Artists like Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, and more dominated the beginning of our set list. We then moved into performing music by artists like Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Finally, we ended the night performing contemporary material that everyone could sing along with. Guests danced non-stop from beginning to end, and we limited our breaks to ensure people had as much time to dance as possible.

Testimonial

"One of the top priority items we were budgeting for our wedding was a band. I did a lot of research and went to shows for a few bands that we were interested in. ECS grabbed my attention right away from the first youtube video I saw of them and then when myself with some family members went to see them play live, we couldn't help but jump up and dance! SOLD. They did not disappoint! I couldn't wait for them to start playing at the reception and be right up there dancing! They are so great to work with, very flexible, super reasonable $, hard working, talented, friendly, versatile....I could go on. THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU!!! Love, Kate and the Shaw family"
