Preparing for the Wedding

In December of 2016, East Coast Soul was excited to perform at the wedding of Nancy and Andrew at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Boston! Although we are a Boston based wedding band, we find ourselves traveling more often than staying local, so we felt lucky and grateful to be Nancy and Andrew’s choice for entertainment on their special day!

Boston is especially beautiful during the Christmas season, and the Courtyard Marriott Downtown proved to be the perfect venue for this festive wedding. Not only was this our first time working at this hotel, but we also learned that it was the first time a live band had performed at a wedding here! We are always excited to come to a venue that is new to us, and we were thrilled to give the welcoming, helpful staff a great first experience working with a live band!

A Local Event

Since this was a Boston wedding, East Coast Soul got a little extra beauty sleep in the morning before arriving at the venue to load in our equipment and complete soundcheck. Soundcheck is one of the most important elements of our preparation, because it guarantees that we make necessary adjustments to sound great no matter what the space and the acoustics are like. We wanted to pay special attention to the sound here especially because it hadn’t been used for live music before, and we had to set the bar high for future events!

Cocktail Hour

During the planning process, Nancy and Andrew asked East Coast Soul to provide cocktail hour music in addition to reception entertainment. The most popular choice for cocktail hour is our jazz duo of Ed on guitar and Marcus on saxophone. The cocktail hour sets the tone for a wedding reception, and we love starting with jazz and kicking the night off with a classy mood. Our musicians performed an hour set of Frank Sinatra, John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, and more, while the guests enjoyed some drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

The Reception Begins

As is often the case, East Coast Soul was asked to provide MC services for the program portions of the evening. Set to a few James Brown hits, we introduced the parents of the bride and groom, the bridal party, and finally the newlyweds. We then moved straight into the couple’s first dance, which is almost always one of the most meaningful and memorable parts of the evening. This is when the couple can take a moment for themselves amid the craziness of the day. For Nancy and Andrew’s wedding, we were asked to perform our rendition of Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic.”

After the first dance, dinner began, during which we introduced the maid of honor and best man for their toasts, and then welcomed the bride and groom back into the spotlight to cut their cake. After dinner, the band was ready to deliver a performance and the couple and their guests were ready to hit the dance floor!

A Classic Wedding Performance

Tonight, the groom and his mother christened the dance floor while we performed “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong, and then we invited the guests to join in as we moved into the rest of our performance.

Nancy and Andrew love motown, doo-wop, and other older material, which is perfect because that’s how we typically prefer to begin the night. This is always a great way to get people on the dance floor, enjoying songs they already know well. Artists like Little Richard, Sam and Dave, and Paul Simon dominated the beginning of our set list, and we played more contemporary music as the night went on. Because this wedding was so close to Christmas, the bride and groom requested some holiday songs as well, and we had a blast changing up our set list and adding things like “All I Want For Christmas is You.” As usual, we limited our breaks so the guests could spend as much time on the dance floor as possible, and we kept the Christmas hits rolling to make for an extra festive night!

Thanks, Nancy and Andrew, for making us a part of your special day!
