A Coastal Backyard Celebration in Marblehead, MA
East Coast Soul had the joy of joining Meg & Chris for an unforgettable September wedding at their private residence in beautiful Marblehead, Massachusetts. This was a celebration infused with energy, personality, and a truly spectacular dance party—exactly the kind of atmosphere our Stax ensemble loves to help create. From a packed dance floor under the tent to heartfelt surprise performances from family, this day had everything.
Preparation & On-Site Logistics
Our planning with Meg & Chris began well in advance, making sure every detail—from ceremony needs to power, staging, and custom performances—was mapped out clearly before we arrived. Their backyard venue featured a professional-grade generator, a raised 12’x16’ performance riser, and a weather-ready tent setup overlooking the property.
Load-in began just before 1:00pm, with rhythm section arriving at 2:45pm and vocalists/horns at 3:15pm. One unique aspect of this wedding was the involvement of the groom’s sister, Paige, who planned to join the band for multiple performances. Soundcheck included walking through her songs, confirming keys, lyric prep, cue structure, and balance with the full rhythm section—ensuring everything was dialed in long before guests arrived.
Cocktail Hour
At 5:00pm, guests transitioned into a breezy cocktail hour just steps from the main tent. The band performed from the stage, featuring a laid-back four-piece arrangement—guitar, tenor sax, bass, and drums—perfect for a coastal setting. The couple requested a “classics-forward” vibe, pulling inspiration from Van Morrison, Fleetwood Mac, and timeless soul. The result was warm, relaxed, and welcoming as guests settled into the evening.
Formal Entrance & First Dance
Just before 6:00pm, Meg & Chris gathered at the back of the dance floor for a high-energy introduction. With the tent absolutely buzzing, we welcomed them into the reception for the first time as husband and wife—big cheers, lots of volume, and tons of excitement.
Immediately following, the couple shared their first dance to “Deep Dive” by TRMN & Shoby. At their request, we played the track loud—a detail important to them, and one that elevated the moment beautifully. As soon as the song wrapped, the band launched into a short set of upbeat tunes to kick-start the dance floor long before dinner began.
Dinner, Toasts & Transition to Evening
Instead of formal seating, Meg & Chris opted for roaming food stations from 6:15–7:30—perfect for keeping the party momentum high. During this window we provided a small instrumental combo (sax, keys, bass, drums) with an upbeat dinner-set vibe. Guests moved freely between the bar, the buffet stations, and the dance floor while music kept the energy elevated.
Toasts took place at 6:30, featuring heartfelt words from the Maid of Honor and two Best Men. As is often the case with private-residence events, flexibility was key—our audio team provided dedicated microphones for speeches, ensuring smooth transitions without interrupting the flow of food service or music.
Parent Dances & Special Performances
At 7:30, Meg and her father took the floor to Delbert McClinton’s “Giving It Up for Your Love”—a fun, upbeat choice that matched the couple’s lively vision for the night.
One of the most memorable moments came next: Chris’s sister, Paige, joined the band to perform a custom rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Your Song”. With the ensemble accompanying her live, she delivered a beautiful, heartfelt version of the tune before returning later in the night for another crowd favorite, “You and I.” These moments brought an intimate, family-centered touch to an already emotional evening.
An Unforgettable Dance Party
From 7:40 onward, it was full-tilt celebration. This crowd loved a mix of throwback classics and indie-influenced favorites, with must-plays including “Mr. Brightside,” “6’s to 9’s,” “Valerie,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and Stevie Wonder staples.
One very special highlight: Paige returned to the stage to close the night with Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart”—a show-stopping performance that absolutely electrified the room.
The family also prepared a surprise of their own: the McNamara brothers took the mic during the band’s break to sing the folk classic “Charlie & The MTA” a cappella. Guests loved it, and it made the evening feel even more personal and joyful.
The dance floor stayed packed straight through 10:30pm, with the venue generously allowing a few extra minutes for the final songs. It was an energetic, emotional, laughter-filled night from start to finish.
Final Thoughts
Meg & Chris’s Marblehead celebration was the perfect blend of coastal charm, family involvement, and nonstop dancing. Their trust in us—and their bold musical choices—made the day feel uniquely theirs. We were truly honored to provide the soundtrack to such a memorable night.
Congratulations to Meg & Chris! Thank you for having East Coast Soul be part of your incredible celebration by the water.
