Abenakee Club Wedding in Biddeford Pool, Maine
Venue: The Abenakee Club, Biddeford Pool, ME
Band: East Coast Soul – Soulsville Ensemble (Seven-Piece)
Couple: Ashley & Thomas • Date: July 23, 2022
If you’re picturing a Maine coastal wedding that feels breezy, relaxed, and quietly elegant, The Abenakee Club in Biddeford Pool fits that vibe to a tee. Set right along the water, with a classic New England clubhouse and an oceanside lawn, it’s the kind of place where the whole day feels like a summer weekend with your favorite people — only dressed up a little. For Ashley and Thomas, who hosted their wedding here in late July, East Coast Soul’s Soulsville Ensemble brought music from cocktail hour straight through the final dance in the tent, and the day unfolded with that special “coastal Maine in mid-summer” kind of magic.
A Classic Maine Coastal Wedding Venue
Biddeford Pool is one of those corners of Maine that still feels wonderfully tucked away — quiet roads, weathered shingle houses, ocean on every side. The Abenakee Club sits right in the heart of it, with a simple white clubhouse, wide open lawns, and a tent that basically becomes the center of gravity for the entire celebration. Guests can park along the clubhouse and croquet courts, wander toward the back lawn, and instantly feel like they’re settling into a summer gathering rather than a formal wedding schedule.
For couples planning a coastal Maine wedding, the Abenakee Club offers something that’s surprisingly rare: a true oceanside venue that still feels private and intimate, without sacrificing the classic New England charm that out-of-town guests fall in love with instantly.
Cocktail Hour: Live Music on the Lawn
While Ashley and Thomas held their ceremony off-site, guests arrived at the Abenakee Club ready for cocktails on the lawn. East Coast Soul kicked things off with a guitar and sax duo — a perfect fit for a breezy oceanfront setting, giving guests that relaxed, summery soundtrack as they mingled under the late-afternoon sun.
The duo leaned into soul, light Motown, and upbeat instrumental tunes, keeping everything easygoing and warm. With the ocean just steps away and the tent set for the evening ahead, it felt like peak Maine summer in the best way.
The club’s rain plan (covered porch and clubhouse) meant everything could pivot indoors easily if needed, but July delivered exactly the kind of cocktail hour weather everyone hopes for on the coast.
Reception Under the Tent at the Abenakee Club
The reception took place under the large tent behind the clubhouse — one of our favorite setups for a Maine coastal wedding. As guests transitioned from cocktails to dinner, the Soulsville Ensemble arrived, finished soundcheck, and prepared to kick off the night with a full, high-energy performance.
Formal introductions started the evening strong, with the wedding party and parents walking in to “About Damn Time” by Lizzo. The combination of a summer tent, a fully packed wedding party intro, and Lizzo blasting through the PA is, frankly, unbeatable energy.
The newlyweds were introduced as “Mr. and Mrs. LeBlond,” keeping things classic, quick, and classy — just the way they wanted it.
First Dance & Parent Dances
Ashley and Thomas chose “Adorn” by Miguel for their first dance, played from a recording with a fade-out around 2:10. The tent lights, summer air, and packed crowd around them made it feel sweet and effortless.
Before opening up the floor, they moved into their parent dances. Ashley and her father danced to “I Loved Her First” by Heartland, while Thomas and his mom chose “How Sweet It Is” by Marvin Gaye. Both were shortened slightly to keep the pacing tight — something that works beautifully for tented receptions.
Warm, personal, and simple — the perfect emotional lead-in to the rest of the night.
Dinner with an Instrumental Jazz/Soul Combo
One unique detail from this wedding: dinner began just a few minutes after introductions, with champagne poured and salads served quickly to keep momentum going. The band provided a small instrumental combo — sax, keys, bass, and drums — offering a smooth mix of jazz-leaning soul tunes that fit the tone of the evening without pulling focus from speeches.
Toasts came from maids of honor, best men, and Ashley’s father, with timing coordinated around the dinner service and vendor meals. As the sun dipped lower across Biddeford Pool, the tent took on that golden coastal glow that only seems to happen in July.
Cake Cutting + Transition to the Dance Floor
As dinner wrapped, the couple moved into a quick, simple cake-cutting moment — announced just long enough for everyone to gather, but not so long that the energy dipped. The tent was already buzzing, and you could feel the shift toward the party phase of the night.
The Abenakee Club tent layout is perfect for this: no matter where guests are seated, they can turn, stand, and immediately participate without having to relocate or lose their drink in the process.
Full-Band Dance Party on the Maine Coast
At around 7:40 PM, East Coast Soul’s Soulsville Ensemble kicked into their first dance set. And from the very first note, the floor stayed packed. The couple’s request list included “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” “You Are the Best Thing,” and anything Lizzo — basically a roadmap to a guaranteed party.
The tent danced, sang, and jumped until the official 10:30 PM cutoff (with the venue allowing just a *few* bonus minutes to wrap things up right). Coastal Maine weddings tend to draw out that “summer camp for grown-ups” energy, and this one absolutely leaned into that feeling — glow string lights, warm air, and everyone barefoot or in very tired dress shoes by the end.
The Soulsville Ensemble fed off the crowd’s energy all night, and the combination of the tent, the ocean breeze, and a crowd ready to celebrate made it one of those evenings that felt like it could’ve gone on forever.
